A winter footmuff for a newborn is one of the first warm items parents buy for a baby born in autumn or winter. At DoRechi we have been making footmuffs since 2011, and we have put together 8 key questions to help you choose the right winter cocoon footmuff or baby sleeping bag.

1. Materials

Products for newborns should meet the highest quality standards, have no unpleasant smell or sharp parts, and be easy to care for.

2. Purpose and length

  • For a carrycot, models up to 75 cm work best.
  • For stroller seats and pushchairs, the optimal length is up to 100 cm. This ensures comfort and a proper fit.

3. Room to grow

A baby grows 8-10 cm over the winter. Choose a footmuff that is comfortable now and in a few months, even over a warm romper or snowsuit.

4. Car seat safety

Car seat harnesses should fit snugly against the body. A thick footmuff or snowsuit under the straps creates a gap and reduces safety. Choose a footmuff with harness openings, or buckle your baby in light clothing and cover them with the footmuff on top.

5. Convenience for parents

Check:

  • whether the zipper opens fully - this makes it easier to lay a sleeping baby inside;
  • whether the hood protects from wind without covering the face.

6. Caring for the materials

  • Sheepskin cannot be machine washed - it needs dry cleaning.
  • Fleece is easy to machine wash and dries quickly. This matters if you use the footmuff every day.

7. What to wear under a winter footmuff

Even the warmest footmuff works better with the right clothing. Scandinavian parents use layering:

  • Base layer: bodysuit and leggings made of cotton or fine wool (merino). Wool keeps warm and wicks moisture.
  • Warm layer: a fleece or wool romper, socks and a hat.
  • Footmuff: protects from wind and cold outside.

In frosty weather, add wool socks, booties and a hat that covers the ears. Remember: wind and humidity make the weather feel colder than the thermometer shows.

8. How to tell if your baby is warm enough

Touch the back of the neck:

  • warm and dry - all good;
  • sweaty - remove a layer or unzip the footmuff;
  • cold - add a layer.

Cold hands or red cheeks do not always mean your baby is cold. Overheating is just as dangerous, so open the footmuff in a warm shop or car.

For frosty walks you will also need a stroller hand muff for mum and a winter hat for babies. Once your baby starts walking, a kids' winter snowsuit takes over from the footmuff.
