A winter walk with a baby starts at home: the weather, layers, a footmuff in the stroller and a bag with spare things. Here is a short checklist so you don't forget anything, with the DoRechi items that help. For what to wear at a specific temperature, see our weather guide from +25 to -20 °C.

Before you go out

  • Check the wind and humidity, not just the temperature: a windy, damp day at 0 °C can feel colder than a dry, frosty one at -5 °C.
  • Dress your baby in layers: a base layer, a warm middle layer and an outer layer that keeps out wind and wet.
  • Get dressed yourself last, so your child doesn't overheat while you get ready.
  • Make sure the footmuff is fixed in the stroller and the harness goes through its openings.
  • Charge your phone and take a thermos with a warm drink for yourself.

What your baby wears

  • Base layer: a cotton bodysuit or sleepsuit.
  • Middle layer: a jersey top or thin fleece.
  • Outer layer: the Apollo winter snowsuit (height 74-98 cm) or the Discovery (56-74 cm); for older children, snow pants with a jacket. All are made for +5 to -20 °C.
  • Hat and snood: a warm merino wool mix hat and a snood that covers the neck.
  • Booties and mittens: winter booties (about +5 to -10 °C) and waterproof mittens (+5 to -20 °C); in harder frost add warm socks inside.

Choose a snowsuit by height, not age: every child grows at their own pace. How to measure and how much room to allow: see our size guide.

The stroller

  • A winter footmuff. A baby in a stroller hardly moves, so for naps on a winter walk you need a footmuff: Baby XS from birth to 9-10 months or Trend from 6 months to 3 years. Both have 5 harness openings and are made for +5 to -20 °C. Which one to choose: Baby XS vs Trend.
  • A hand muff. A stroller hand muff fits single and double handles, with or without a hand brake, and your hand doesn't touch the cold handle.
  • A cup holder. The universal cup holder clamps onto the stroller handle without tools and holds large thermos cups, and the 2-in-1 cup holder also has a phone holder.

Your walk bag

  • Spare mittens and socks in case they get wet in the snow.
  • A nappy, wet wipes and a muslin or changing mat.
  • A warm drink or formula in a thermos, a snack for an older child.
  • A bag for wet or dirty things.
  • A thin blanket in case you have to wait on public transport or outside.

All of this fits in the mom's diaper backpack: 14 pockets, including 2 waterproof and 3 insulated ones, a changing mat and buckles for the stroller handle.

Safety in the dark and on the road

  • It gets dark early in winter: reflective elements on clothes and the stroller make you more visible to drivers. The Apollo snowsuits have them, for example.
  • Don't buckle a child into a car seat in a bulky winter snowsuit: take it off, buckle your baby in, then cover them with a footmuff or blanket.
  • When you go into a shop or onto public transport, unzip the snowsuit or footmuff so your child doesn't overheat.

During the walk

  • Now and then touch the neck or the back between the shoulder blades: warm, dry skin means all is well.
  • A sweaty neck and red cheeks mean your baby is too warm: take off a layer.
  • A cold neck and back mean your baby is cold: add a layer or head home.
  • In hard frost and wind, keep the walk shorter and check on your baby more often.

After the walk

  • Take off the outerwear straight away so your child doesn't overheat indoors.
  • Dry the snowsuit, mittens and booties laid out, away from radiators.
  • Wipe dirt and snow off the snowsuit with a damp sponge - no need to wash it after every walk. How to wash and dry winter wear: our care guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should I take on a winter walk with a newborn?

Spare mittens and socks, a nappy, wet wipes, a muslin, a warm drink in a thermos and a bag for wet things. A baby in a stroller needs a winter footmuff, and a hand muff on the stroller handle keeps your hands warm.

Does my baby need a footmuff over a winter snowsuit?

For stroller naps in frost, yes: the baby lies still and the footmuff covers them on all sides. A child who walks and runs usually doesn't need one.

How can I tell if my baby is warm enough?

Touch the neck or the back between the shoulder blades: warm, dry skin means all is well. A cool nose and hands on their own don't mean your child is cold.

How do I buckle my baby in while in the footmuff?

Baby XS and Trend footmuffs have 5 harness openings: the stroller harness goes through them, so your baby is buckled in right inside the footmuff.
