A baby's head is one of the most exposed parts of the body on a winter walk, so a winter hat matters as much as a footmuff or a snowsuit. Here is what to check so the hat keeps your baby warm, is gentle on the skin and stays on.
1. Yarn: merino wool
Merino wool is soft and warm, and blended with cotton and viscose it feels pleasant against the skin. For example, the yarn in DoRechi winter hats is 35% viscose, 30% merino wool, 25% cotton and 10% nylon for elasticity. The hat retains heat well, does not cause overheating and does not create static.
2. Lining: only cotton for babies under one year
A baby's head should touch only natural materials. Under sanitary norms, only cotton is allowed as a lining in hats for children under one year old. So check the lining as well as the outer yarn - in DoRechi hats it is 100% cotton.
3. Insulation for frosty days
For cold days, choose a hat with extra insulation between the yarn and the lining. DoRechi winter hats use siliconised synthetic padding. For spring and autumn, a lighter mid-season hat (+5 to +20 °C) is a better fit.
4. Fit: ears and ties
A winter hat should cover the ears and sit snugly so the wind cannot blow it off and it does not slip over the eyes. Ties hold the hat securely in place.
5. Size
DoRechi hat sizes are given in centimetres, from 38 to 46. Before ordering, measure your baby's head with a tape measure: above the eyebrows and ears, around the widest part of the back of the head. If you are unsure between two sizes, message us and we will help.
6. Decor: ears or a pompom
Decor does not affect warmth, so choose what you like. Check how it is attached: on DoRechi hats the pompom is detachable, with a snap button, so it is easy to take off before washing.
7. Care
Wool hats are hand washed only, in warm water with a wool detergent, without a washing machine or dryer. Do not use fabric softener or bleach, and do not iron the hat - the yarn will stay soft for longer.
8. Hat and snood
On windy days, add a snood to the hat - it covers the neck and does not come undone like a scarf. DoRechi snoods are made from the same yarn as the hats, so they are easy to match.
How to tell if your baby is too warm
Overheating is just as dangerous as getting cold. Touch the back of your baby's neck: warm and dry - all good, sweaty - remove a layer, cold - add a layer. Take the hat off in a warm shop or car.
